General Club Information:
Since the club was founded in Spring 1999, its membership and competitiveness have continued to grow. As a member of the Chicago Area Rugby Football Union (CARFU) with six other women's collegiate teams, NU has become an annual competitor for the league title, winning the CARFU Cup in 2001 and 2002. Beyond CARFU, the team plays college teams in the Midwest Rugby Football Union, including many Big Ten schools, as well as older women's club teams from Chicago , Milwaukee , Indianapolis and elsewhere. For dedicated players, there is opportunity to advance to Chicago area select, Midwest select, and USA select sides.
The club's roster fluctuates between the fall (competitive) and spring (developmental) seasons but general hovers about 20-25 players. Due to eligibility requirements from USA Rugby, the sport's national governing body, all players are full-time undergraduate students. The team holds two practices during the week and matches on weekends throughout the fall and spring. During the off-season, players continue skill development in optional practices and work on conditioning and weight training individually. Every other year, the team travels and compete internationally on Spring Break with NU's men's team. In 2002 the teams traveled to Barcelona , Andorra and Perpignan, and France. In 2006, the women's team traveled to Ireland, and in 2008, to Germany.
Club dues are usually around $70 per season. We do not hold tryouts, so anyone who wants to join the team is able to come out to practice and play. We usually have six or seven games each season, traveling to roughly half. For league games, travel is limited to the Chicagoland area, but we usually take one overnight trip to locations such as University of Michigan. Practices and home games are played at Long Field.
