General Club Information:

Past History:
The Northwestern Sailing Team can trace its history back to the late 1950's when teams practiced in downtown Chicago, with the NU boathouse constructed on campus in 1974. Since that time the NU sailing team has ranged from a relaxed learn-to-sail program to a nationally competitive team attending numerous national championships and graduating two college all Americans: Roslyn Rea who received sailing's top honor 1987 and Scotia Ryer in both 1995/1996. Today Northwestern continues to be a top school in the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association placing 2nd at the 2007 Fall Dingy Championship. Additionally, Northwestern was the only Midwest school to attend both the Single-Handed and Sloop Nationals in the fall of 2007.

Schedule:

Competition occurs from early September through Thanksgiving and starts back up in late March continuing through early June with regattas most weekends. The Northwestern sailing team attends upwards of 25 events each year. Practice is held in the fall and spring Monday thru Thursday from 3-6 out of the NU boathouse. Team members are asked to attend practice at least twice a week. Single-Handed and Sloop Nationals occur in the fall while Co-ed, Women's, and Team Race Nationals are held in the spring.

League Affiliation:

College sailing features over 200 schools and is governed by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). The ICSA is broken down into seven regional districts, with the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association, of which Northwestern is a member, stretching from Minnesota to Ohio.

Club Dues:

150 dollars per year. Team members are also required to purchase proper sailing gear their first year.

Tryout Schedule:

Try outs are held each fall.

Practice Locations:

NU Sailing Center, located on south beach which features a fleet of 12 420's and 8 lasers.

Competition Locations:

Schools all over the country, however most events are in the Midwest. Frequent locations are Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Michigan, however this past year we attended events in Seattle, Larchmont, and Dallas.
