Coed Sport Clubs
General Club Information:
The Northwestern Karate Club practices Shotokan karate which was founded by Gichin Funakoshi. Shotokan has three main components: kata (forms), kihon (basics), and kumite (sparring). Club members engage in all three components at a typical practice.
All skill levels are welcome, even if you have never done a martial art before. New members may join through-out the year.

Club History:
The Northwestern University Karate Club has had a long history of excellence. The club was founded in 1968 by Shojiro Sugiyama , the former chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association of Chicago and the Great Lakes Region of the American Amateur Karate Federation (AAKF). Mr. Sugiyama led the Northwestern team to the national free sparring championship in 1977 and again in 1984.
Practice Schedule and Location:
All practices are held in the Patten Gym Blue Room on north campus.
Monday: 8-10 pm Wednesday: 8-10 pm Sunday: 1-3 pm
Competition Schedule:
Tournaments are optional but are always a lot of fun. They are typically held on Saturdays.
October: Purdue Tournament November: Madison Tournament February-March: Minnesota Tournament April: Northwestern Tournament (Patten Gym)
Club Dues:
$45 per quarter
