Coed Sport Clubs
General Club Information:
President: Colin Rolfs email: < mailto:c-rolfs@northwestern.edu Club History: Northwestern Crew has traveled a long way since its founding in 1981 by a junior rower, Derek Grava. Derek Grava's initial crew team consisted only of a small group of people eager to row. Unfortunately, they had no equipment, no money, and no varsity support from the university. Over the next few years, with increasing membership and ideas for fundraising, the team expanded, and they were able to raise money for a boat and oars. They petitioned the university to become a varsity team, but were continually denied. As of today, NU Crew is still a club team, but now is the largest club sport at Northwestern. Practice Schedule: NU Crew practices year round, with two racing seasons - one fall and one spring. The varsity teams practice in the morning at 6:30, but the novice teams practice in the evenings. During the fall and spring, we practice on the Skokie Channel west of campus (not the lake!), and in the winter, we live in the basement of Patten Gym. Yearly Highlights: During the fall, the varsity teams fly to Boston to compete in the Head of the Charles, one of the most prestigious races in the world. During the Spring, there is the team training camp in South Carolina (so much fun!) and races in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio. The year culminates with a trip to the Dad Vails regatta, the biggest collegiate regatta in the US. League Affiliation: MACRAs (Mid American Collegiate Rowing Association) Club Dues: Between $1000-1500. Includes all travel expenses (including plane tickets) and a week-long training trip to South Carolina. Tryouts: All are welcome! Official recruitments in the fall, but always looking for new members. Competitions: During the fall season, we go to around 5 races. Once Spring season starts, we race almost every weekend. Most regattas are away, so we normally leave on Friday night, get back on Sunday. Practice Location: Skokie Channel and Patten Gym. Home races: Skokie Channel.
