General Club Information:

Aikido, “The Way of Harmony”, is a practical and dynamic self-defense art and a profound path of self-discovery. The curriculum includes powerful throws, strikes, joint locks, and pins, along with traditional weapons training with the wooden sword (boken), four-foot staff (jo) and knife (tanto). Aikido does not require size or strength. Speed, timing, and technique are developed which allow the weak to overcome the strong. Anyone can practice Aikido, regardless of size, gender, or body type.

The Northwestern University Aikido Club (Zanshinkan Dojo) was founded by Shihan (master instructor) Fumio Toyoda (1947-2001) in 1974. It was the first dojo he founded in the United States . Since then a tradition of Aikido training has been carried on by Northwestern students under the instruction of Shihan Toyoda and his students. These include our current instructors Godan John Mazza and Sandan Glenn Patterson. The Northwestern Aikido club is currently affiliated with Shinjinkai Dojo (Godan Meido Moore, head instructor) in Chicago . Shinjinkai is in turn affiliated to Birankai International under the direction of T.K. Chiba Shihan and Aikido World Headquarters (The Aikikai Foundation).

In addition to training, the Aikido club holds several social events a quarter and our members often gather for impromptu club dinners after practices. We also encourage dialogue with other NU clubs, such as the NU Zen Society, Japan club, Karate club, and other NU marital arts organizations. Belt tests are held at least once a quarter at Shinjinkai dojo, where club members are welcome (free of charge) for additional training. We also hear about many local Aikido and related martial arts seminars and special events that our members are encouraged to attend. Additionally, we publish a bi-annual news letter about our Aikido training experiences. Archived newsletters and more detailed information about the club and Aikido can be found on the club's website.
