Refund/cancellation policy

Your receipt and program pass are very important. You must present your program pass to the entrance monitor to gain admittance to the facility for each scheduled class time. Your receipt is also required to process any refund requests. No refunds are given after the first week of class. Note: A $30 fee will be charged for all checks returned with insufficient funds.

Refund policy for aerobics classes: A refund request must be filed within one week of purchase to receive a full refund, less a $10 processing fee.

Photo policy

Classes and events are occasionally photographed for promotional purposes. Anyone wishing to be excluded should tell the photographer.

Family Recreation Policy

Fitness and Recreation provides recreation opportunities for the entire family. We also realize the need to reserve various times for "adults only" to provide a more conducive environment for relaxation and peaceful recreation by our priority clientele (students, faculty, staff, and alumni). To serve the needs of families and also of those who prefer to recreate without children present, we have set the following FAMILY RECREATION POLICY:

  • Children under the age of 16 years are restricted to using the Recreational Sports Facilities only during designated FAMILY HOURS.
  • The FAMILY HOURS during the academic quarters are as follows:
  • Monday 8:00am-11:30am Friday 8:00am-11:00pm
    Tuesday 8:00am-11:30am Saturday 8:00am-11:00pm
    Wednesday 8:00am-11:30am Sunday 8:00am-11:00pm
    Thursday 8:00am-11:30am
  • The FAMILY HOURS listed above are times when the building as a whole is open for family use. Please be aware that certain areas of the facility (such as the pool) may not be open at various times during FAMILY HOURS. Please check the Aquatics Center schedule for specific pool hours.
  • During the periods between academic quarters and during the summer quarter, family hours will exist whenever the facilities are open.
  • Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult to gain admittance to the health/fitness facilities and must be chaperoned at all times while in the facility.
  • Children under the age of 16 years may NOT use the Patten Weight Room or the Sports Pavilion Conditioning Room. Children are not permitted on any of the Cardiovascular Machines (i.e. exercise bikes, treadmills, stair machines, or rowing machines).
  • Children under the age of 16 may NOT reserve court space, check out equipment, locks, or towels.
  • During specified hours, Racquetball Court #1 will be reserved for FAMILY RECREATION. Volleyballs, frisbees, hula-hoops and other toys will be placed in the courts for your child's enjoyment. ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT WHILE IN THIS COURT. The following are times this court is reserved for family recreation:
  • Friday 8:00am-9:00pm Sunday 8:00am-9:00pm
    Saturday 8:00am-9:00pm
  • During the following times, the north end of Basketball Court #1 will be reserved for Family Informal Basketball Shooting:
  • Saturday 8:00am-9:00am Sunday 8:00am-8:00pm
    10:30am-12 noon
    1:00pm-4:00pm
    5:00pm-8:00pm

Equipment Check Out Policy

Items such as basketballs, volleyballs, racquetball rackets, and jump ropes are available for check-out by Northwestern Students, Faculty/Staff, Alumni, or facility members. There is a minimal fee or no charge for these check-out items unless the equipment is returned late, lost, stolen, or damaged. The Henry Crown Sports Pavilion Pro Shop contains the majority of check-out equipment. Patten and Blomquist do have check-out items, but they are minimal.

The following is the policy for checking out equipment:

  • Only Northwestern Students, Faculty/Staff, Alumni, or facility members may check out equipment.
  • To check out equipment, a participant must leave valid identification with the Pro Shop cashier. The cashier will note the items checked out on an equipment check out form and attach the identification to the form. The form and identification will be filed alphabetically.
  • All equipment must be returned by closing time of the facility where the equipment was checked out.
  • Any item not returned or returned damaged, will incur the following replacement fees:
  • Basketball: $25.00 Lock: $10.00
    Racquet: $15.00 Towel: $5.00
  • If the replacement cost is not paid within 30 days of being assessed, students will have a hold placed on their registration and transcripts. Non-students will have their facility usage privileges revoked.
  • Equipment is checked out on a first come, first serve basis. Recreational Sports will not reserve items for individuals or groups.
  • Rental Fees:

    Racquetball/Tennis Racquet $.50
    Squash Racquet: $1.00

General Building Policies

The following are building rules which have been established to help provide a safe, well-maintained and comfortable environment for all Fitness & Recreation Facilities:

  • Proper and valid identification is required to gain access to any of the Fitness & Recreation Facilities.
  • Children under the age of 16 years are allowed access during designated Family Hours only and must be accompanied by an adult to gain admittance to Fitness and Recreation Facilities. Youth must be chaperoned at all times while in a facility.
  • Bicycles are not permitted. Bike racks are located in the front of each Fitness & Recreation Facility.
  • The use of skateboards, in-line skates, and rollerskates in the facilities are prohibited. Please remove skates in outer lobby before entering.
  • Muddy or dirty shoes are not permitted. Participants are asked to please change into a separate, clean pair of shoes for their indoor use.
  • Proper foot-wear must be worn at all times while using exercise equipment.
  • Only scuff-resistant shoes are allowed in the activity areas of the buildings. Dark soled running shoes, turf shoes, and spiked shoes are prohibited. Any other type of shoes which may mark the floors are not permitted.
  • Motorcycles may not be parked under the sports and aquatics center front entry canopy.
  • Entry and exit of the facilities must always be made through the designated main entrance and exit. Individuals entering or exiting through non-designated doors are subject to arrest and prosecution. Access to the pool is through the locker rooms only.
  • Jump roping is prohibited on the second floor of the Sports and Aquatics Center.
  • Place coats and other excess clothing in lockers or on provided coat racks. Do not bring valuables into the facility. If you must bring valuables into the facility see the Front Desk Attendant about special lock boxes. The University is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Locks are available for check out at the Front Desk.
  • No eating or drinking except in designated areas.
  • To assure that proper information is disseminated to our participants, we ask that all questions be directed to the Membership Registration Office in the Crown Sports Pavilion/Norris Aquatics Center lobby. To avoid incorrect information being given out, we have required all our part-time employees to direct all inquiries to the Membership Registration Office.
  • No spitting in the drinking fountain.
  • No animals or pets of any kind are permitted in any of the buildings.
  • Children five years of age and older may not use the locker room of the opposite sex. If your child needs to be escorted through the locker room, please ask the Front Desk Attendant who will radio a supervisor to escort your child through the locker room.
  • Please report all injuries to the FIRST AID STATION which is located at the front desk entrance.
  • The Fitness & Recreation Division recommends that any individuals involved in strenuous activity carry appropriate identification in case of an emergency.
  • NO SMOKING is permitted in any of the Fitness & Recreation Facilities.

Participants are asked to respect the rights of other participants. Please display good sportsmanship and manners so that participation in all fitness & recreation facilities is enjoyable and safe.

Building Supervisors have been employed to enforce the aforementioned GENERAL BUILDING RULES. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the rules, please call 847-491-4303 or stop by the Membership Registration office.

Pool Use Guidelines

Aquatic Center supervisors and lifeguards have been given the authority and responsibility to ensure a safe pool environment and to enforce all university pool use guidelines. This authority includes restricting the swimming, diving or spectator privileges of patrons not complying with pool use guidelines. Pool staff also may eject patrons whose behavior is deemed unsafe or disruptive to others.

Please consult the lap lane assignments outside the locker rooms for specific lane availability. Swimming and use of the pool is restricted to times when a university appointed lifeguard, swim instructor or coach is on duty.

  • Persons with communicable diseases or infectious conditions such as colds, open sores, and eye infections shall not be permitted in the pool. Apparel worn in the pool must be clean. No cut-offs.
  • Spitting or polluting the swimming pool water or related facilities is prohibited.
  • Running, unnecessary roughness, pushing and horseplay are prohibited. No flips or backward jumping from the side of the pool.
  • Eating, drinking or smoking is not permitted in the pool, on the deck or in the bleachers.
  • Glass containers of any sort are not permitted in the pool area.
  • The following flotation devices may be used in the shallow end of the pool: Coast Guard approved life jackets (not water ski vests), water wings attached to the arms of small children provided that a parent accompanies the child while in the water.
  • Lifeguards have the right to refuse the use of any flotation device deemed hazardous or being used improperly.
  • Air mattresses, inner tubes, pull buoys, balls and other inflatable flotation devices are not permitted.
  • Please enter the pool area through the locker room doors only. The lobby doors are for emergency and special event use only.
  • Swimming under the bulkheads is prohibited.
  • Balls, frisbees and toys are not permitted in the pool area.
  • Diving is limited to the deep end of the pool only.
  • Racing blocks may only be used by those directly supervised by a NU coach.
  • Children under 16 years of age are permitted in the pool only during posted family recreation hours. A parent or adult guardian must accompany all children while they are using the pool. Hanging, sitting or standing on lane lines is prohibited.
  • Sitting, standing, jumping on or throwing kick boards is prohibited.
  • Use of profane language is prohibited.
  • Use of the pool is limited to authorized patrons only.
  • Divers must look out for other swimmers and divers in their landing area before jumping or diving from boards or platforms.
  • Divers are limited to a four step approach. No running approaches are permitted off diving boards/platforms.
  • Jumping or diving must be straight forward. No angular or "to the side" take-offs.
  • Exit the diving well immediately after surfacing by using the closest side ladder. NEVER CROSS IN FRONT OF A DIVING BOARD OR PLATFORM.
  • Swimming in the diving well is limited to times when the diving boards/platforms are closed.
  • One person on a spring board at a time; one person on a ladder at a time (3 meter board); other patrons must wait their turn on the pool deck.
  • One bounce on the board unless an NU appointed diving coach is present.
  • Inward or reversal dives are prohibited.
  • Hand stands and cartwheels are prohibited on all deck areas, boards and platforms.
  • Jumping or diving from the north deck is prohibited.
  • Use of the diving boards/platforms is limited to patrons able to swim to the side without assistance.
