New Multi-Use Facility Construction Updates

Please pardon our dust as construction of a new multi-use facility continues!

Construction of the North Campus Parking Structure has reached a point where the Contractor will need to install  caissons and portions of the underground utilities in the area currently occupied by the portion of North Campus Drive  immediately west of SPAC.    Effective at 6am on Wednesday, May 29th,  therefore, that portion of North Campus Drive will be closed and vehicular traffic will be routed to a temporary road through the construction site.  The approximate route of the temporary road is indicated in a dark orange color on the attached pdf file.   This temporary road will be constructed of compacted gravel and will not have curbs.  The temporary road will be bordered on both sides by  construction fencing.

Please note that this temporary road will not be wide enough to accommodate a pedestrian path along its route and will therefore need to be limited to vehicular use only.  Pedestrians will need to utilize the paths, indicated in green on the attached drawing, to access SPAC and other campus buildings south of the construction site.  The pedestrian path at the north has been shown to indicate the shortest route for those coming from  Lincoln Street and areas north.  The sidewalks along Lincoln Street and the east side of Campus Drive adjacent to the Reservoir Lot will remain open primarily to allow access to the beach once it opens for the summer.

It is expected that the temporary stone road  will need to be in place for approximately 6 weeks at which point the road (Campus Drive) will shift to its final location along the west side of the site.  At that time the curbs and the sub base & binder course of pavement for the new road will be in place.

There will be some days during the course of the next six weeks when the utility work will require the closure of one lane of traffic at the north end of the site during the day.  As with previous instances where this has been required the Contractor will have flaggers on site to direct traffic so that it flows as efficiently as possible.

The new six-level parking facility being built on the existing surface parking lot is part of a planned major athletics and recreation complex on the north end of the Evanston campus. The new facility will have space for fitness/recreational activities, as well as for clinical services and academic programs.

During construction, alternate parking will be available:

NU Faculty Staff Permits:

  • South of the Crown Sports Pavilion & east of Searle & Cook Hall
  • East of the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion
  • East of Kemper Hall

Blue "S" Sports Pavilion Permits:

  • East of the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion only

SPAC Access During Construction

A new temporary south entrance to the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion/Norris Aquatic Center has been constructed. The existing west entrance to the sports and aquatic center is closed.

The new south entrance is complete and open.

All current activity areas in the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion/Norris Aquatic Center and Combe Tennis Center will remain open during construction.

The SPAC expansion will include expanded fitness and exercise studio space, a juice bar, a wellness suite and meeting rooms.

We apologize for this inconvenience but look forward to our new fitness and recreation facilities and the improved service to the university community!
